Chelsea to “try to offload” £33m signing they never should have bought to start with

Nizaar Kinsella is getting in to his groove with the summer transfer window fast approaching, and today he has an article in the Evening Standard about Thiago Silva’s future.

The Brazil defender wants to stay put, but the real interesting detail in there is about his teammate Kalidou Kouliably. He was signed for big money last summer, and now apparently Chelsea are expected to “try to offload him.”

They are keeping Silva, they have Wesley Fofana and Benoit Badiashile on the books as alternatives, plus the returning Levi Colwill as an exceptional young talent.

That means there’s no real room for Koulibaly, who arrived last summer for £33m. There are teams in Italy likely to be interested, but they will all struggle to match his £200,000 a week wages.

This shows how much of a pit this ownership have got themselves into with these wages they’re paying. While simultaneously trying to play hardball with key players like Mason Mount, they’ve got players they don’t need (and possibly never needed) like KK sitting there on prohibitive wages which prevent other teams coming and helping us out by buying him.

Perhaps a loan can be arranged – but ultimately it’s all going to be a bit of a waste of time given we will be back here in a year’s time with the defender a year older but still on the same wages.
