Chelsea players react “positively” to Pochettino news

Now that the long awaited appointment of Mauricio Pochettino as Chelsea boss has happened, fans can finally get their teeth into the many long reads spewing all over the internet about how the process went.

ESPN have a good one which takes us all the way back to September, when Thomas Tuchel was fired. Pochettino was apparently considered then, but in the end the owners went strongly for Graham Potter, and appointed him within two days. We all know how that ended up.

This time they went for the opposite approach, and according to this piece both Julien Nagelsmann and Luis Enrique Martinez were put off by that. In the end, Pochettino was left as the last elite candidate standing.

The players in this squad have looked remarkably disinterested all season, so it’s good to hear the piece claim that this is an appointment they approve of:

“Sources close to multiple players in the squad have told ESPN that Pochettino’s appointment has been greeted positively, not least because of the clarity it will bring this summer.”

Those players may be happy now, but some of them will inevitably end up on the list of players getting shipped out. Hopefully by the time Pochettino officially takes charge on the 1st of July we have a significantly smaller group to deal with.

There should be “clarity” to come, but for now it’s all as muddy as can be.
