Bayern Munich’s refusal to sell €80m midfielder could mean Chelsea star more likely to leave – opinion

There is a potential merry go round of top class central midfielders developing for the transfer market this summer, and Chelsea could be involved.

The news so far is that Ilkay Gundogan is keen for a new challenge away from Manchester City, and has offers from Barcelona and Arsenal to consider this summer.

Man City aren’t going to let him leave without a superb replacement though, and they’ve apparently got their eyes on one of Europe’s best.

The news this morning was that Joshua Kimmich of Bayern Munich is in their sights. If they can’t get him, they’ll go for Mateo Kovacic, who has one year left on his deal at Chelsea and is reportedly for sale.

But this afternoon, Football Espana have reported in the Tweet you can see above, that Kimmich is going nowhere.

If they put their foot down – and there’s no reason they shouldn’t – then City are far more likely to look further down their list and end up with interest in Kovacic.

Chelsea would rather not sell to a rival of course. But if they aren’t in a position to be too picky. One could quite reasonably say that we’re so far behind City in reality that they’re hardly rivals.

That’s certainly how it looks out on the pitch today, in any case.

Chelsea will be on this central midfielder merry go round too – and selling Kovacic would raise desperately needed money.
