“When they get an opportunity” – Pundit explains how tentative Chelsea threw away their lead – and how top teams would have done it different

Alejandro Moreno watched Chelsea’s draw with Everton for ESPN at the weekend, and had some interesting observations about how the Blues threw their lead away.

He compared the tentative way that Graham Potter’s team played on the two occasions they went a goal up – looking to control the ball and the game rather than capitalise.

“When they get an opportunity to not only score a goal, but to actually create separation in a game, you see wave after wave of attack. When Man City gets on a run you see that wave of attack. When Arsenal are attacking you see that high press. When Manchester United are at their best too.”

He contrasted this with what Chelsea had tended to do – sit back, pass it sideways, and hand their opposition the advantage.

The game against Everton was a perfect example of that, and Graham Potter’s substitutions attracted a lot of criticism for that exact reason. Bringing on players like Conor Gallagher for attacking players makes sense at the time, but really when you’re at home against a relegation battling side, you should probably look to be more expansive and more ambitious and put the game to bed like those top teams mentioned above would.
