Midfielder has not asked for £300k a week – but does have one issue with Chelsea offer

The Mason Mount situation is undoubtedly getting messy. He and Chelsea are in a contract stalemate, and if it’s not resolved by this summer, he will be sold to avoid him leaving on a free transfer in a year’s time.

If he is sold there will be stories from both sides trying to blame one another for what happens, and you can already see signs of that in The Athletic’s piece today.

They reject the idea that Mount is asking for a crazy £300,000 a week. The idea he’s asking for crazy money has been the foundational argument of those saying he should go.

The sticking point seems to be the length of the deal. The new ownership want to tie all their players to very long commitments, while Mount is determined to have it end before he’s too old to seek another big deal.

That is tricky – but doesn’t at all rule out a balance being found.
