Marc Cucurella had to google Chelsea’s most expensive signing ever

Marc Cucurella has a funny story about how he came to find out about his new teammate Enzo Fernandez.

The Spaniard says he was at home watching the World Cup back in December when a certain number 24 started impressing for Argentina. We’re not sure how a top level footballer doesn’t know a rising star like Enzo, but clearly Cucurella doesn’t pay that much attention to European football.

In any case, after being impressed by the midfielder he looked him up to find out who he was, as he explained in quotes picked up the Daily Mirror.

“I liked to watch matches in which my friends were playing, so I was watching Argentina because of Alexis [MacAllister, his Brighton teammate].

“I think I said, ‘I really like number 24, he’s very good!’ But I didn’t even know where he played! I had to go and search on my phone! As I watched more games, I told my family and friends that I really liked him a lot. And then he came to Chelsea!

“I told Enzo that I had liked him at the World Cup. He’s a good guy, I’m waiting for him to cook me a barbecue.

“He is very young, but he is very talented with the ball and he is intelligent. He’s still adapting but he’s already played some good games. We have [signed] a great midfielder.”

Now of course Cucu will know better than most people just how good Enzo is after training with him for a couple of months. Like the rest of us, he’s had a front row seat to his superb quality.
