Graham Potter explains his usage of “really unlucky” Gallagher who is a “fantastic team player”

Conor Gallagher came on as a sub against Everton on Saturday, reprising a role that he has made his own since Enzo Fernandez and Mateo Kovacic established themselves as first choice in Graham Potter’s midfield.

In his press conference after the game, the Chelsea boss talked about Gallagher’s role as a regular second half sub brought into the game to refresh the legs in the press and to add a bit of steel to the team when they start to look lightweight, and said that the academy product was a “fantastic team player” for accepting that task every week.

Potter says the “really unlucky” Gallagher will be disappointed by his role as a super sub, but we’re not so sure. Of course he’d rather be starting, but given it’s his first season in the league, and given the quality of competition around him, we doubt he’s too upset by being first reserve in midfield.
