Claims Chelsea have ‘changed their position’ on one current key player

Chelsea have reportedly changed their stance on one of their key current players.

The Blues have a number of players with contracts running out in the next two or three years and that means decisions need to be made, contracts need to be agreed, or players need to be sold. Because it’s become clear that the club do not want to lose any more players as free agents.

One player who has a contract running down in 2024 is midfielder Mateo Kovacic, who has recently been handed temporary captain duties.

Most of the talk was that he could be sold in the summer, but according to Ben Jacobs, Chelsea are now keen to keep Kovacic due to Jorginho leaving in January and a lack of leadership.

Speaking to Teamtalk, Jacobs said: “Chelsea have kind of changed their position a little bit because they’ve got rid of Jorginho and they realised that Kovacic has got leadership and can also chip in with the odd goal.

“So now Chelsea’s position on Kovacic has changed from maybe six months ago. And their preference would be to try and agree something if they can, that keeps him at the football club. So whereas maybe towards the end of last year, we were talking about Kovacic as being a player more likely to leave than stay.

“Now I think Kovacic is, arguably, more likely to stay than to leave.”

Of course, Kovacic will have to agree to a new contract for him to stay, so it won’t all be on what Chelsea want at all.
