Chelsea goalkeeper signs new contract

Chelsea’s 3rd choice goalkeeper Marcus Bettinelli has signed a new contract at the club, it was announced on the club’s official website this afternoon.

It will keep him at Chelsea until 2026, with the 30 year old having made one appearance for the club since signing in the summer of 2021.

The stopper had some positive words upon signing the new deal:

“It is a privilege to be at a club like Chelsea, one of the biggest clubs in the world, and a couple of years ago when I signed I was delighted to be here, delighted to sign. To be here now and see the club going through this transition and seeing what we are developing, it is amazing to be a part of and I am buzzing to be here for an extra couple of years.”

He’s taking up the role we see across all top teams these days – a home grown third choice goalkeeper fills up one of the slots necessary in UEFA competition, allowing more flexibility in terms of nationality in the rest of the squad.

He’s never expected to play – just warm the bench from time to time when one of the other keepers is out injured.

His main role – apart from being a talking talking admin box-ticking exercise – is to be a positive influence in training and in the dressing room – and clearly he’s good at that, as he’s been signed up for another year.
