We’re always reluctant to criticise goalkeepers much because it’s a very specialised and technical skill, and we don’t know what we’re talking about when it gets to the real specifics.

But when a former Premier League goalkeeper comes out and says what we’re thinking, we’re relieved to find out we had the right idea all along.

That’s what’s happened today with former Manchester United goalkeeper Ben Foster speaking about Kepa Arrizabalaga on his podcast.

Kepa let Ellis Simms’ late shot slip under him to give Everton a last minute equaliser, and while we tried to bite out tongue, Foster has confirmed it just wasn’t good enough.

“Let’s talk about Everton’s equaliser because I think Kepa should save it,” Foster said in quotes picked up by the Evening Standard.

“This is a big moment, we’re in injury-time so if he saves that, it’s 2-1, three points, boom, everyone is happy. These are the fine margins but I think a top goalie has to save that.

“It’s a slightly awkward one so I’ve got a bit of sympathy but you need to make those big saves. He fell a little bit short. I don’t think Kepa is the right guy for it, full stop. I don’t think he’s the long-term solution.”

Where do you go to find a better goalkeeper? Well there are a few out there, but the important thing is that we don’t go into yet another season with Kepa as our best option.
