Chelsea had deadline day talks with Fiorentina over another massive signing

Chelsea ended the January window having broken records all over, but things could have gone even further according to a fascinating story in the New York Times today.

Apparently as Behdad Eghbali tied up the final details of the Enzo Fernandez transfer, Todd Boehly was on the phone to Fiorentina. He was asking about Sofyan Amrabat, another star of the World Cup.

Boehly was quoted an 8 figure sum, called it unreasonable, and the deal was over.

It’s a further astonishing example of how far these owners are willing to go. We can’t imagine how the footballing world would have reacted if we’d bought yet another player this week, let alone for big money. We can’t even fit our whole current group into our Champions League squad.

The piece basically reaches the conclusion that these new owners are either very very smart, or very very stupid, and we’re going to find out over the course of these next 7 years.
