Talented Chelsea defender to head to Germany on loan

Chelsea academy player Bashir Humphreys is heading to 2. Bundesliga team Paderborn on loan for the rest of the season.

The defender has been heavily involved with first team training all year, and made his senior debut in the FA Cup against Manchester City this month.

After playing his way up through the ranks at Cobham, it was time for Humphreys to go and test himself in the senior game, and this looks like a really nice starting point for him.

Interestingly it’s Benjamin Weber, one of Thomas Tuchel’s assistants from his time at Chelsea, who is the new sporting director at Paderborn, who is behind the deal. Perhaps we will see more players from the academy head out there in the years to come if this deal goes well for all sides. Twomey suggests that this deal could be extended next season if Humphreys is playing regularly and doing well.
