Chelsea ready to pay Enzo Fernandez fee in full – but in 6 stages

So far, Benfica have held out against Chelsea’s pressure as the Blues try to sign Enzo Fernandez.

Our initial attempts at the start of the month were rebuffed, as the Portuguese side demanded we pay the midfielder’s entire €120m transfer fee.

Our offers have crept up in value, and now Cesar Luis Merlo is reporting that we are indeed paying what has been asked. The difference is that we’re attempting to pay in 6 stages – one upon completion followed by 5 subsequent tranches.

That negates the unilateral release clause, while still giving Fernandez’ club what they want in return for him.

The long and short of it now, as Merlo says, is that it’s down to club president Rui Costa. He’s been offered the money he wants, just not in the structure he wants. Whether or not that proves enough to break his impressive resolve we will find out in the coming hours.
