The terrifying reason Raheem Sterling had to return to England

When Gareth Southgate announced that Raheem Sterling had gone back to England from the national team camp in Qatar, we knew something had gone wrong.

We knew it was unlikely to be a punishment or for anything that Sterling himself had done – he’s never any trouble. But it must have been serious to precipitate him leaving the World Cup halfway through.

It turns out it is indeed awful – Sterling’s home in London was broken into while his family were there, and he’s had valuables stolen.

It’s something that’s happening more and more to footballers, and it’s tragic to see. Not only is it a horrible thing to happen to them, it also forces them further and further from society, into little gated community bubbles.

Let’s just hope Raheem isn’t too shaken up and can come back and re-join his country out in Qatar, where they’ve just reached the Quarter Final.
