Why Ian Maatsen shouldn’t be recalled by Chelsea this January

Burnley are back on top of the Championship after a 3-0 demolition of Blackburn Rovers live on Sky Sports.

Once again, Chelsea loanee Ian Maatsen was influential for Vincent Kompany’s side as they tore apart their local rivals.

The left back has been one of the best players in the division this season, and plenty were for calling him to be recalled in January when the window opens once Ben Chilwell’s injury happened.

That seems unnecessary now – Chilwell will likely be back by the time we play our next game, Marc Cucurella is a good backup and Lewis Hall has proved himself a capable third choice in his two games this week.

So instead Maatsen can continue developing in the Championship, playing every week and learning his trade in the notoriously physical and intense second tier. By the end of this season he will certainly be ready for the Premier League, and Chelsea will have to think very seriously about his future.
