Chelsea need a backup right wing back – that was clear in the summer but they never pulled the trigger.
Inevitably Reece James picked up an injury, and we’ve been short handed ever since.
James will be back fit by the time Chelsea are back in action, but they doesn’t diminish our need for a backup. One candidate suggested in the summer was Denzel Dumfries, who remains on our radar.
A report in SportWitness today claims that his club Inter Milan are interested in selling, and he remains a tempting target because of the Romelu Lukaku situation. The striker is on loan at Inter, who are likely to want to sort out a permanent deal at the end of the season. We can see the logic there.
If we throw Dumfries into the mix as a part-exchange, that cleverly allows us to sell Lukaku without openly taking a humiliating loss on the more than €110m we paid for him just 18 months ago.
