Chelsea captain admits “we need to look at ourselves” in honest assessment

The fallout from Chelsea’s defeat to Arsenal on Sunday is still filtering through, with players, managers, fans, and pundits alike all having their say.

It was a narrow loss for Chelsea in terms of the score line and the goal coming from a set piece that Chelsea should have defended. But it was the manor of the performance from Chelsea and for me, how we lacked effort and intensity that really caused the frustrations after the game.

Sources: Some Chelsea players unsettled and still looking for an exit route!

Blues captain Cesar Azpilicueta has an honest assessment of the game and more importantly, recent Chelsea performances being nowhere near good enough, via the Chelsea website.

The Spanish international admits that Chelsea players need to look at themselves right now, because the performances going into the Arsenal game have not been good enough.

Speaking about how Arsenal have been together as a unit building a project for longer than Chelsea have been under the new ownership and new manager, Azpilicueta said: “They have been working together for longer, that’s true, but at Chelsea the demand is always high. We have to go in every single game for everything.

“It is true that we were not going into the game in the best moment in terms of performances, in terms of position in the table. They were in a better moment, but once you step out onto the pitch it’s a London derby, everything has to stay there.

“I think we need to look at ourselves because we are not in the position where we want to be, in terms of everything I think – goals scored, goals conceded, the way we play, the performances. This is a collective issue that we have to address.”
