Potter’s formation shift shows madness of summer spend

Chelsea spent a lot of money this summer on central defenders, with all the planning for this season presumably expecting Thomas Tuchel’s 3 man back line to be the primary formation.

But in Graham Potter’s first Premier League game in charge, he’s just shown he intends to play a back 4, meaning Kalidou Koulibaly, signed for big money despite his advancing years, is on the bench, and Trevoh Chalobah’s chances of playing any significant games this season are essentially nil.

This – along with the investment on Pierre- Emerick Aubameyang – shows the folly of buying players for a manager you don’t know will be sticking around.

We expect we will play with a back 3 on plenty of occasions and everyone in the squad will get their chance at some point in this hectic season, but regardless this squad is now going in a whole new direction to the one that was intended with the signings we made this summer.
