“I have to get out of here” – Callum Hudson-Odoi on leaving Chelsea

Callum Hudson-Odoi has given his first proper interview since leaving Chelsea on loan to join Bayer Leverkusen, and there’s some really interesting stuff in there about the process that took him to make that decision.

According to him, it was pretty clear by the end of last season that it was time for him to move somewhere where he could play every week, and he seems happy with the decision so far.

“My mindset was, ‘I have to get out of there.’

“Not in a rude way, as in I don’t like the club or I don’t want to be at the club, nothing like that. But I needed to play football somewhere new. Start afresh. Try the best I can wherever I am. And then go back to Chelsea at the end of the loan.

“You look at the players you’ve played with throughout the years, and you say to yourself, ‘They’ve done it in the league as well. They’re doing really well. So I thought, I’ll come over here and give it a shot.”

We still hope Callum comes back and tears it up for us next year, and we’re delighted to see him thriving in the Bundesliga. If Graham Potter decides he doesn’t fancy the winger, or the club end up spending big on attacking players in those positions, you can be sure that CHO won’t feel too hard done by – especially if he keeps making a success of his time in Germany.
