The right back who turned down Chelsea for Marseille

One of Chelsea’s most interesting targets of the summer was Jonathan Clauss.

He has an amazing story, working his way up through football until he reached Lens, where he looked great. He earned a France callup, and is in the squad again for this window.

This summer he had the chance to move to Chelsea it seemed, but ended up at Marseille, who are looking good.

Asked on international duty about why he had turned down the Blues, he explained he didn’t basically want to be a bench warmer just so he can say he played for a big team.

As a 29 year old he wanted to be a regular starter in the Champions League, and at Marseille he’s found just what he was looking for.

Chelsea ended up finding other solutions at the back, and it’s interesting to speculate what other plans might have changed if Clauss had signed for us instead.
