Sterling happy in “different role” under Graham Potter

Raheem Sterling looked like a good signing for Chelsea from the very start – a good age, plenty of experience, and top quality. So far, he’s proven to be just that.

Even in the dying weeks of the Thomas Tuchel era Sterling was one of the few players still performing, and he’s made a bright start under new boss Graham Potter.

Sterling was used as a kind of left wing back against RB Salzburg on Wednesday night, and it worked nicely. Despite a nominally more defensive role, Sterling played very high up and got in plenty of dangerous positions, including the moment where he scored the goal.

His comments on how he had enjoyed that position were notable too:

“I played in a slightly different role under the new manager, and it is one I enjoyed playing, out wide. Over time, I will get better,” he said in quotes picked up by Football.London.

“I am happy to play along the front line, but he wanted me out wide, getting at the full-back, getting in the box and creating chances. The more time under him [Potter], I think the better it will be for us.”

We don’t expect him to be a fixture there, but depending on the fixture, it’s clearly something we can expect to see more of in the future when Potter feels the time is right.
