(Image): Marc Cucurella’s threat down the left made clear in progressive carry stat

One notable moment in the first half of Chelsea’s game against RB Salzburg saw Marc Cucurella, playing as a left centre back in a 3, overlap outside Raheem Sterling and reach the byline.

That’s the kind of thing you don’t see centre backs too often. It points to one of the former Brighton man’s strengths – his running with the ball.

In fact, in Europe last season there were only 7 player who made more ball progressing carries, and all of them were attackers or midfielders.

We wonder if this was one of the stats that Chelsea’s transfer team were keen on?
