How Chelsea ended up with Aubameyang instead of Depay

It’s the international break which means, as always, interesting quotes doing the rounds.

The Blues spent the summer targeting various strikers, and on deadline day ended up spending relatively big money on a 33 year old Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang.

It’s fair to say it wasn’t a move that got a lot of fans too excited – and in fact a lot of them would have preferred to sign the Gabon striker’s teammate at the time, Memphis Depay.

Barca needed to sell one in order to afford all their signings, so it could have gone either way, but in the end Depay decided he wanted to stay put at the Camp Nou, as he explained in quotes picked up by the Evening Standard:

“Other clubs came and then you just look at your options. I decided to fight for my chance here,” Depay explained.

“I was the top scorer of Barca with Aubameyang. I love competition and I don’t walk away from it. I enjoy being at Barca.”

He’s now going to spend the season sitting on the bench, watching Robert Lewandowski bang in goals.

We wonder if he will end up regretting not coming to Stamford Bridge?
