How Antonio Rudiger’s brother tricked him into top performances against Real Madrid

The whispers about Antonio Rudiger leaving Chelsea had been around for a long time, and Real Madrid were long considered favourites.

But according to the defender, it wasn’t until the spring that he knew that he was likely going to be heading to the Spanish capital over the summer.

“It really became concrete at the end of April,” the defender told Sport 1.

But the story doesn’t end there. Chelsea played against Real Madrid in the Champions League Quarter Finals, and Rudiger’s brother – who is also his agent, had a trick to get him to perform to his best in the two legs.

Rudiger was always a player with the capability for incredible highs and some surprising lows, so to get the best out of him, his brother told him that the deal with Madrid was in question, especially after the first leg defeat at Stamford Bridge.

It was a brilliant ploy to get Toni to play well – and it worked.

“Before everything was clear, however, my brother led me around by the nose a bit. We had played with Chelsea against Real in the quarterfinals of the Champions League.

“After the first leg defeat, he suddenly said to me: ‘Toni, I don’t know if this is going to work out! In the second leg, you have to show everything you’ve got to make the switch work.’

“My mind was blown, and that spurred me on.”

Chelsea fans are gutted to see him go, and the fact that he’s not even a guaranteed starter in the Real team makes it even more painful. We’ve replaced him with some good players, but Rudi was special, and it’s tough to see any of the new guys earning a place in our hearts like he did.

As for his brother – perhaps he could try that trick on a few of our other underperforming first team stars?

  1. Shame he didn’t do it for the first leg when he bottled the 50-50 with Benzema…only time I’ve seen him pull out of a tackle.
