Chelsea’s “priority” in midfield for January transfer window

Chelsea’s “priority” midfield signing this winter will be Edson Alvarez, according to the increasingly well connected Ben Jacobs.

He says that the Ajax man is Chelsea’s “midfield priority” for January, with Liverpool also keeping tabs on the Mexico international, who will likely fetch a large fee, especially for a mid-season move.

Alvarez is clearly a player that Chelsea’s scouting team like, but as Jacobs notes, it will need the blessing of new manager Graham Potter, as well as that of Kyle Macaulay, the recruitment analyst Potter brought with him from Brighton.

That gives Denis Zakaria precious little time to make an impact. After our attempts to sign Alvarez failed late in the summer window Zakaria was brought in on loan as a substitute. He’s yet to play a minute, and if N’Golo Kante is back fit soon, the Swiss international could end up playing just a handful of games before the January window opens.
