Chelsea’s new plan for right wing back cover revealed

Chelsea had to sort out an exceptional number of issues with their squad over the summer, and it was inevitable that there would still be some holes come the closing of the window.

A right wing back reserve to back up Reece James was one need that was never really dealt with, with Cesar Azpilicueta signing a contact extension to keep him around for another year in that role.

But offer were made, including one for Inter Milan’s Denzel Dumfries.

He didn’t end up joining, but SportWitness report that we’re still interested in signing him, and indeed that we could return in January to make another attempt.

Interestingly, they say that we would leave him on loan in Serie A for the rest of the season, a move you usually only see used with young players. Given he’s only coming to Chelsea as a backup, we’re not sure what benefit there would be to signing him then letting him stay at another club.
