Chelsea’s deep squad should help them through long winter

The postponement of Chelsea’s last two league games has had a big benefit in allowing Graham Potter extra time to get to know his squad.

The downside will be later in the season, when an already packed schedule reaches bursting point, but on the official Chelsea website today, Pat Nevin has some positive spin on that.

He points out that there was an entire XI which didn’t start against RB Salzburg last week which could easily have played and won:

Mendy; Fofana, Chalobah, Koulibaly; Ziyech, Loftus-Cheek, Kante, Chilwell; Pulisic, Gallagher; Broja.

He almost notes that Carney Chukwuemeka and Denis Zakaria are waiting in the wings to come in too.

So rather than look ahead with gloom at the fixture chaos to come, we should be more like Pat and see it as a chance for Potter to continue getting to know this squad, from the most experienced senior players all the way down to the young prospects pushing for first team chances.
