Chelsea changes continue with head press officer on the way out

Todd Boehly and his new co-owners didn’t waste much time making changes behind the scenes at Chelsea once they had taken over, and even now, almost 6 months later, there are major moves taking place.

The latest departure is Steve Atkins, currently the club’s Director of Communications. Atkins has been in place for a long time, and is a familiar face to those of us who watch every press conference.

He’s been through some tough times, and working alongside Maurizio Sarri seemed particularly testing – although Antonio Conte provided a few challenges too.

A statement from Chelsea praised his impact and hard work for 14 years at the club:

“For the past 14 years, Steve has been responsible for the club’s external global media relations, issue and crisis management and public affairs work, and more recently added its industry-leading editorial and publishing output across web, app and social media channels to his remit.”

Atkins will be on “gardening leave” from now until December, when he will start a similar job at McLaren Racing team.

It’s not clear who will replace him, although Toby Craig, currently in a similar role at Man City, looks likely to be the man chosen.
