Tuchel says he has to do what’s best for squad – not individuals

The Sun last night had some interesting comments from Thomas Tuchel about Conor Gallagher that we hadn’t seen elsewhere, with the Chelsea boss explaining the situation in midfield.

He sees the same issue that we do – we all want to keep Conor around because he’s a top player, but there are only two spaces in midfield in this formation, and a lot of players competing for them.

As Tuchel says, he would love to play Conor, but he has to do right by the team, not by individuals. There are also some interesting comments indicating the midfielder’s performance in training has dipped a little.

“I’m a huge fan of Conor. He is first of all a fantastic guy,” Tuchel said.

“In the first weeks of training, he showed how much of a step he made by having so much playing time and how much of a personality on the pitch he became.

“It’s a very very normal situation in development that, after some really fantastic training sessions in the beginning, there’s a little dip in form, a dip in freshness at the moment, from which he suffers.

“On top he has huge competition with N’Golo [Kante], Jorgi [Jorginho] and Kova [Mateo Kovacic], who are used to playing with each other.!

It’s going to be really tough for Conor to get any good minutes this season, and Tuchel is openly admitting that here. Could these words be preparing us all for his exit from the club?
