Todd Boehly’s comments make Chukwuemeka’s role this season clear

Chelsea have today announced the signing of Carney Chukwuemeka from Aston Villa on a six year contract.

The superbly talented midfielder was into the last 12 months of his deal at Villa, so the Blues were able to snap him up for around £20m. The first pictures of him in a Chelsea shirt were released on the club website today, alongside the announcement of the signing and some comments from Carney and owner Todd Boehly.

Boehly’s comments are particularly interesting, as they make it clear that the new arrival will slot straight in to the first team picture:

“Carney is one of the most exciting young players in Europe so we are really looking forward to seeing him in action at Stamford Bridge. We are delighted to be able to bring him to Chelsea and add such a talented young individual to our squad for the new season and beyond,” the club chairman said.

That’s exciting news, as it means we could see him in action very soon. This Sunday’s game against Everton will come too soon, as he’s barely been assigned a locker at Cobham yet, but we will start to see him come on as a sub in the weeks to come, and his first start won’t be far away.
