Thomas Tuchel points at ‘new generation’ coming in at Chelsea

Thomas Tuchel really values experience at Chelsea, that is very clear to see.

Having replaced experience with even more experience with Kalidou Koulibaly coming in for Antonio Rudiger, and Tuchel so clearly fighting hard to keep captain Cesar Azpilicueta at the club this summer, it’s obvious that he wants his team to be full of experienced heads, and there is a lot of value in this.

But, it’s also about the balance. On Saturday, Tuchel’s first choice back three was Azpilicueta (32), Thiago Silva (37), and Koulibaly (31), so there isn’t much youthful legs in there. This will be his preferred back three, unless they manage to pull off the Wesley Fofana signing, who would probably then come in for Azpilicueta.

But Tuchel also values the importance of youth, and he is planning for a new generation coming in to take over from these guys very soon, as reported by The Daily Mail.

‘It is a lot of experience (with Silva, Azpilicueta and Koulibaly) and they have their quality and know what they are doing,” Tuchel said.

“We need to make sure we have a new generation to take over in the next years but the guys are strong, that is why they have our trust. Yes, there needs to be a balance.

“But, in general, it is the fact that — like the goalkeeper and the two holding midfielders — they are in their thirties and that is just what it is.”
