Thomas Tuchel confirms assumptions about Marc Cucurella’s position

Thomas Tuchel’s press conference today was an interesting one, with both a big game against Spurs on the horizon and the transfer window still open.

He was asked about whether the club needed defenders and he couldn’t deny that we’re a little short at the back.

His comments on that subject really revealed what his plans were for Marc Cucurella too.

He said that he needed another central defender because he was planning to play a back 3, and while Azpi can cover the right side of the three and Cucurella the left, that still leaves him short of a backup in the middle.

That confirms a lot of the rumours about Cucurella’s move – which was pretty puzzling considering we already have a very strong left wing back. It was speculated that his ability to play on the left of the back 3 would be significant, and it seems that is indeed the case.

  1. Chelsea FC already have nice defenders. Trevor, Azpi, Reece, Tiago, Cucurella, Chiwell, Koulibally.

  2. We are now strong enough at the back, we need Reece, Cucurella, Tiago, and Koulibally to start against Spurs on Sunday
