Lukaku thought he would be an automatic “hero” at Chelsea

Romelu Lukaku’s second spell at Chelsea was basically ruined by one interview, where he spoke to Sky Italia about wanting to be back in Serie A.

His wish has come true – he’s back on loan there – and he’s finally spoken out a little about his disaster return to Chelsea.

In quotes picked up by Caughtoffside, he revealed that he had hoped his return would mean being a “hero” at the ground where he had been as a kid.

“I had the chance to go back and thought I would be a hero, but that wasn’t the case.

“In March, when I heard there was an opportunity to return here [to Inter], I didn’t say anything.”

It’s quite notable how careful he’s being to not be overly negative about the whole thing – perhaps understandable considering he’s not out of the woods yet. The loan was a great solution to get this one particular problem off our hands, but in a year’s time he will be back, and it’s not clear whether a long term solution will be any easier to find then.

Given that, it’s a wise move for him to stay diplomatic. Football is a crazy game, and it would be not that surprising to see him playing back in a Chelsea shirt in a year’s time.
