Late last night, the Daily Mail decided to drop a bomb on the transfer window by announcing shock links between Chelsea and the much maligned Harry Maguire of Manchester United.
The idea is that there would be some kind of part-exchange between United and Chelsea, with Christian Pulisic going the other way. It all feels a bit confected to generate clicks – what better way to do that than link a big club to a player who has become a complete scapegoat for everything wrong with Man United while they’re at their lowest moment.
To be honest, despite all his mistakes in recent times Maguire can be a great defender, and his flaws are only exposed so badly because of Man U’s catastrophic organisation.
At Chelsea, in a back 3, in Thomas Tuchel’s system, he might actually be fantastic. But we’ll stop there, before we end up talking ourselves into this idea.
