Chelsea’s sales keeping the books good as Blues pile into spending

It’s been a while since Chelsea were spending so heavily that fans of other teams were questioning where our money comes from – but our splurge in the last few weeks has taken us right back to that place.

Big money was wasted on Romelu Lukaku last summer, and this year we’ve bought Marc Cucurella, Kalidou Koulibaly and Raheem Sterling for the first team, as well as multiple expensive kids for the under 18s.

Football finance expert Kieran Maguire of Football.London has pointed out that this money isn’t coming just out of Todd Boehly’s pocket, however. He notes that the Blues have sold players for a great amount than anyone else in recent years – Tammy Abraham and Fikayo Tomori from the academy to Serie A last year for £60m, for starters.

So while this will be an expensive summer, especially if we sign Wesley Fofana, it’s one that’s already been accounted for, and selling players like Timo Werner and Marcos Alonso will continue to chip away at the balance.
