Chelsea were monitoring Cucurella before Boehly takeover

The Athletic today have an in depth piece of Marc Cucurella and his mega money move to Chelsea to digest before this evening’s game.

It’s full of interesting details, but we especially like the information about how long the contacts have been going on for.

In terms of the wider media, the links to Cucurella only came to light once Manchester City’s attempts to sign him had failed.

But according to this story, Chelsea’ interest long predates these last two weeks.

In fact, Pol Ballus writes that both Petr Cech and Marina Granovskaia were in touch with the player to inform him that they were monitoring his progress – and that was before the takeover in May.

The assumption was always that the former Barcelona man would go to Man City to link up with Pep Guardiola, but once they had decided they were priced out, Chelsea were on hand to take advantage, having long established links.
