Cesar Azpilicueta has signed a new contract with Chelsea, a fact widely celebrated by the club.
What we didn’t want to see was any revisionist history from either party though – it was clear that Azpi wanted to leave, and that he had clearly thought about it.
So we were glad to read his interview today in the Evening Standard where he talks us through the whole process of wanting to leave and then deciding to stay.
He’s totally honest and open about how he had weighed up his options and thought that it was time to go after winning everything there was to win with the club.
But in the end, talks with the manager and the new owners – plus presumably their reluctance to let their versatile captain go – made it clear that a new contract at Chelsea was the right path for everyone.
We’re so happy to still have Azpi around.
