After months of speculation, Cesar Azpilicueta has decided to sign a new deal at Chelsea and stick around for at least one more year – although his deal will be for two more.
We were disappointed that the club captain might leave for a variety of reasons, but this change of heart gives him the opportunity to break a superb record at the club after more than a decade of loyal service.
As it stands, Azpi is 7th in the all time list of appearances makers for the club, and second in terms of non-English players, with 476.
He’s 18 appearances behind Petr Cech, on 494.
He’s likely to play less and less this season, but will still easily make 18 starts, meaning he will climb to top of the list of foreign Chelsea appearance makers.
That’s a great record, and his name will then truly go down as a club legend, especially when he overtakes fan favourite Petr Cech.
