Talented Red Bull defender drops off Chelsea’s radar

Towards the end of the season, there was one name being mentioned very heavily in connection with a move to Chelsea to replace the outgoing central defenders.

Josko Gvardiol was in the rumour pages week after week, but since then he’s really faded into the background. Our contact with Jules Kounde last summer has always made him strong favourite to be our first defensive signing of the summer, but until recently Gvardiol was a safe second bet.

So what’s changed since then? It’s hard to say. The continued difficulties in getting Kounde in have probably slowed things down a little, and the sale of Romelu Lukaku is also presumably soaking up a lot of the focus for the moment.

It may be that once those deals are sorted that the Croatian defender comes back onto our radar – or it may be that the club have moved on entirely.

Perhaps we were never as keen as was being reported?
