James Pearce is the Athletic’s Liverpool man, and he’s well connected with the club and the players there.
He’s written a piece today about the future of Mo Salah, who has a year left on his contract at Anfield, and recently assured fans we would be staying put next season – effectively admitting he would leave on a free transfer in 12 months.
In the article it’s made clear that Salah wants to stay in the Premier League – which makes a stunning return to Chelsea a possibility, at the very least.
There is no mention of the “Chelsea” in the piece at all, let’s be clear. But if Salah wants to stay in the Premier League, and wants to get paid as much or more than he was at Liverpool, there are very few options.
Man City may well find themselves overstocked in attacking positions if they keep up their current rate of acquisition, and Salah may consider a Man U move a bridge too far given his connection with Liverpool.
