Two Chelsea stars beaten to young player of the year award

Phil Foden has won the Premier League Young Player of the Season award, beating two Chelsea players on the shortlist.

The Manchester City midfielder has been excellent for the second season in a row, and with his on the verge of winning the title, it’s hard to beat his achievements.

Chelsea midfielder Mason Mount was named among the nominees after taking his productivity to a new level this season, and Conor Gallagher was also listed after a superb season on loan at surprise package Crystal Palace.

There’s no denying that Mount and Foden had great seasons, but we feel the same way about both nominations. They’re “young” enough to qualify for this award, but both are well into their third seasons as Premier League regulars.

Age should not be the only barrier for this award – any player who makes above a certain number of appearances in a season should be eliminated from contention.
