Mateo Kovacic goes off injured after horrible tackle from Leeds player

Mateo Kovacic has just been taken off injured after half an hour at Elland Road.

The Croatian was caught by a nasty follow through from Dan James, who saw red for the bad challenge, swinging the game decisively in Chelsea’s favour.

The only consolation is that it’s an impact injury rather than a strain or tweak – although it was a crunching tackle and it could mean some serious bruising that could keep him out for a week or so at the very least.

It continues a real merry-go-round of injuries in midfield, where both Jorginho and N’Golo Kante have missed games recently. Jorginho is back today, but Kante remains benched.

Kovacic’s presence for this weekend’s FA Cup final is now seriously in doubt.

He was replaced by Ruben Loftus-Cheek, who continues his excellent run of getting minutes in recent months.

We will find out more from Thomas Tuchel after the game.
