Danny Drinkwater’s Chelsea statement after he finally exits

Danny Drinkwater has finally left Chelsea, with his contract expiring in a month’s time.

He released a statement on his Instagram which is partly an apology and partly an explanation of everything that happened in a tumultuous few years at Stamford Bridge, mainly spent on dodgy loans.

He wrote a list of excuses for why things went wrong – before claiming he wasn’t going to use them as excuses:

“Injuries, how I have been treated, mistakes I have made, issues of the pitch, lack of game time… the list of excuses could be endless but I would not and can not change what’s happened,” the former Leicester midfielder wrote on his Instagram.

His transfer for around £40m in 2016 was utterly mysterious to begin with, and didn’t end up making any more sense as time went by.

We do feel a little sorry – not everything that went wrong was his fault – but he has been the ultimate scapegoat for a disastrous transfer window that ended up undermining Antonio Conte just as he looked set to establish Chelsea as a major European power once again.
