Creator statistic shows Alonso’s strengths – and damage Chilwell’s absence

According to FBRef, Chelsea’s best creator this season has been Mason Mount, who has performed 98 shot creating actions in his games for the club.

Given he’s our main attacking outlet, and has the most combined goals and assists in the team, that’s no surprise.

But the player in second, with 81 shot creating actions, is more interesting. Marcos Alonso is much maligned, but these number show there can be no denying his quality with the ball in terms of scaring the opposition.

That role in Tuchel’s team has space to attack, and often finds itself receiving balls on the run as they overlap, giving them great opportunities to find teammates close to goal.

It’s a painful reminder of how much this team could have done with Ben Chilwell this season, making similar runs and perhaps being even more productive than Alonso, as well as more tactically alert.

Regardless, there can be no denying that the Spaniard has done his bit, despite his critics.
