Cobham boys dominate creativity stats for Chelsea

The Chelsea culture war over academy products continued yesterday with the news that Mason Mount had won the player of the year award.

You can debate whether the players who come from the Cobham centre of excellence are overrated or not, but the numbers this season don’t lie.

Mount is top of both the goals AND assists category – you can’t ask a player to contribute anything more than that.

A look at WhoScored gives you even more insight into the dominance of the academy boys in the team this year.

Leaving out Kenedy – whose start yesterday was his only one in the Premier League this season – Chelsea’s three top players in the “Key Passes” category were all Cobham graduates.

Reece James and Mason Mount both average 1.8 per game, while Callum Hudson-Odoi racked up 1.7.

You can argue all you want for fancy signing from abroad – as it stands, the locals are the ones getting the job done.
