Chelsea are desperate for central defenders this summer, and the club only want to shop at the top table.
That means buying the very best, from the very best. CalcioMercato are today linking us with Matthijs de Ligt, the Juventus defender who has been regarded as one of the top young defenders in the world ever since he helped Ajax come within 90 minutes of the Champions League final.
There is a big problem with the whole deal though, and one that makes us feel like it could be a non-starter. Giorgio Chiellini, a titan at the club for as long as anyone can remember, will farewell this summer, leaving the Old Lady with a vast gap in their defence.
It seems unlikely they will double down on that departure by letting his natural replacement leave too. But if they’re looking for a rebuild, what better way to start than with a big sale like that?
