Atletico and Bayern Munich made offers to Chelsea player’s agent

Fabrizio Romano’s column on Caughtoffside is always good for finding out a few secret snippets here and there, and this time he’s got some good nuggets on Chelsea.

The circumstances around Andreas Christensen’s departure from Chelsea are increasingly mysterious, with the defender missing Saturday’s FA Cup final for “private” reasons, but Romano is able to reveal how hot the competition was to sign him on a free transfer this summer.

We all know he’s going to Barcelona in the end – and they always felt like favourites – but the Italian transfer insider claims that Bayern Munich tried to reach a deal with him, and that Borussia Dortmund and Atletico Madrid had also been in contact with the central defender’s agent.

All of those are interesting options in their own way, but for the combination of lifestyle and the project, it’s easy to see why Xavi’s Barcelona ended up winning the race for Christensen.
