Antonio Rudiger joins Real Madrid for free – with €400m release clause

It has been known for a couple of weeks that Antonio Rudiger is set to join Real Madrid, but it was only today that we got the confirmation we needed from the top sources.

Fabrizio Romano and David Ornstein were among the transfer gurus who have just confirmed it as a done deal, citing “club sources” and revealing some details about the deal.

It’s around €10m net salary per year, and the medical has been done.

As always in Spain, there’s a release clause, in this case set at the prohibitively high €400m.

That’s deliberately set at an unpayable amount, but also serves as a frustrating reminder to Chelsea fans of the fast amount of money they’re missing out on by letting the Germany international walk away for free rather than selling him.

The announcement will be made at the end of the season, following Real Madrid’s Champions League final against Liverpool.
