Great consolation goals are a real thing. There are some that always get talked about – Klaas Jan Huntelaar crushing a volley for Schalke as his team get battered by Real Madrid,
Our personal favourite was always Daniele de Rossi for Roma against Manchester United, in a similar thrashing.
Sadly now Antonio Rudiger’s stunning goal against Brentford on Saturday will go right onto that list as one of the great meaningless goals. It wasn’t even a true consolation, as it put us ahead in the game, only for the whole team to crumble.
