Todd Boehly wins preferred bidder status to buy Chelsea

Todd Boehly appears to have won the race to buy Chelsea, according to the Telegraph’s Matt Law, who has been all over the process from day one.

Law says Boehly has been named as the “preferred buyer” after months of competing with a host of other offers to buy the club from the sanctioned Roman Abramovich.

It comes at the end of a quite incredible day following a stagnant couple of weeks.

The news that Stephen Pagliuca and Sir Martin Broughton, the other two remaining bidders with Boehly, had been cut from the race meant that Boehly seemed like the de facto winner.

But from nowhere the smokescreen of a £4bn bid from Sir Jim Ratcliffe upset the apple cart, and briefly had everyone believing there was a chance that the club could yet be sold to someone new.
